A day after questioning Malayali IPS officer Anjana Krishna’s educational and caste certificates, NCP(AP) leader and Maharashtra MLC Amol Mitkari, on Saturday, 6 September, withdrew his controversial remarks and issued an apology.

“This was not my party’s stand; it was my personal opinion. I hold the police force and its officers in the highest regard. I fully support the stance taken by our senior leadership. Hence, I am deleting my earlier tweet regarding the Solapur episode and expressing my regret,” he said.

A day earlier, Mitkari had drawn flak for questioning Krishna’s educational and caste certificates, which he claimed to have sought from the UPSC.

His statement invited sharp criticism, with NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule and Congress leader Yashomati Thakur condemning him for targeting a woman officer.

Mitkari had drawn flak for questioning Krishna’s educational and caste certificates, which he claimed to have sought from the UPSC.

The controversy had its origins in an August 31 operation at Kapre Wasti in Solapur district of Maharashtra.

Krishna, the sub-divisional police officer, along with revenue officials, had gone to the spot to curb illegal excavation of murrum soil.

During the action, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar reprimanded Krishna over a phone call, which was seen in a viral video. Initially speaking through a local NCP worker’s phone, Pawar’s voice was not recognised by the officer.

He then connected via video call and, in a stern tone, allegedly asked her to halt the operation.

As criticism mounted, Pawar later clarified that he had no intention of interfering in official proceedings but only wanted to calm down a tense situation.

NDA’s arrogant culture exposed

After the incident, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said that the arrogant manner in which Pawar spoke to Krishna, who was merely carrying out her duty by cracking down on illegal sand mining, reflected the true mindset of the ruling NDA.

He termed it a classic example of how the brazenly arrogant culture set at the very top has percolated down the hierarchy, emboldening leaders to act high-handedly.

“Instead of lauding an officer for exposing corrupt activities and illegal sand mining, Mr. Pawar chose to rebuke her and obstruct her honest efforts,” Venugopal observed.

According to Venugopal, Pawar’s belated justification is nothing more than a face-saving exercise. “He has not even apologised for his rude and unbecoming behaviour, which further exposes his arrogance,” he said.

Supriya Sule said that the attack on Krishna’s credentials by members of the ruling dispensation is a grave assault on the Constitution. She said that when elected officials engage in character assassination, it undermines the Rule of Law, Articles 14 and 311, and violates constitutional guarantees of gender equality.

She emphasised that all members of the Executive must be protected from political intimidation to uphold the ‘Idea of India’ and urged that appropriate action be taken to preserve the dignity of public office and the independence of the civil services.

Although the IPS Association is still silent on the controversy, several IPS officers, including Chennai East Joint Commissioner of Police Vijayakumar, have come forward in support of the Malayali IPS officer.

However, no IPS officers from Kerala or posted in the state have responded to the issue.
