Maharaja's College

The government-run Maharaja’s College in Kochi was shut down indefinitely over an alleged attack on a leader of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) who was injured after an alleged attack by his political rivals inside the campus, police said on Thursday, 18 January.

The victim, Abdul Nasar PA, is the unit secretary of the SFI — student wing of the ruling CPI (M) — in the Maharaja’s College. He is currently under treatment at a hospital for his injuries, they said.

According to police, Nasar was attacked inside the campus late on Wednesday night by the activists of the Kerala Students’ Union (KSU) and Fraternity Movement, another youth outfit.

This was allegedly in response to the SFI leader’s protest against them regarding the alleged stabbing of an assistant professor by a student in the same college following an argument over the suspension of another student.

Assistant professor stabbed

A case has been registered against a student of Maharajas College for allegedly stabbing an Assistant Professor inside the campus following an argument over the suspension of a fellow student, police said on Thursday.

Nizamuddin KM, working as an Assistant Professor with the Research Department of Arabic at Maharaja’s College, lodged a complaint with the police here alleging that he was stabbed by Mohammed Rashid using a knife on Wednesday.

According to the complainant, the accused had argued with him at the Department over the suspension of another student.

In a fit of rage, the student stabbed him with a sharp object from behind. Police said the accused was absconding and a manhunt was launched to nab him.
