As Kerala gears up for the local body elections in December 2025, the State Election Commission has launched LEAP-Kerala (Local Body Election Awareness Program), a comprehensive voter awareness campaign aimed at educating citizens, especially youth and college students, on the election process, voter registration, and key differences from Lok Sabha and Assembly polls.

District-level committees led by Collectors have been formed, and awareness materials such as short videos, posters, and Q&A sheets are being circulated on social media. However, the draft voters’ list has come under criticism from the Opposition.

Leader of the Opposition in Kerala Assembly VD Satheesan alleged massive irregularities in the voters’ list published on 23 July. He claimed that the names of deceased persons remain, while genuine voters have been removed or shifted across wards.

Satheesan blamed the discrepancies on data collection done with the involvement of CPI(M) local leaders and demanded that the deadline for voter list corrections be extended from 15 to at least 30 days.

He further criticised the Commission for increasing the number of voters per booth in rural areas to 1,300 and reducing polling booths, warning that this could delay voting beyond 10 pm. He said the UDF would explore legal action if the State Election Commission does not act impartially.
