The Kozhikode police on Tuesday, 21 February, arrested the two persons who allegedly raped a nursing student in the city on Saturday.
“The accused have been arrested and identified. They have been charged under IPC Section 376(d). They will be taken for medical check-up and will be produced before the magistrate later on the day,” a Sub-Inspector of Police of the Kozhikode Kasaba Police station told South First.
According to the police, the accused are Ambady (19), a third-year BSc Botany student at Sree Narayana Mangalam College in Ernakulam, and Amal (20), a dialysis technician course student at MIMS Hospital in Kozhikode.
Both of the accused are natives of Munambam in the Ernakulam district.
They were nabbed after an investigation by tracking their mobile phones.
The survivor has identified the accused, according to the police.
“Accused no 1, Ambady, was friends with the girl. Around 8 pm on Saturday, he took the girl to his room, where accused no 2, Amal, was present. The three of them consumed alcohol there and the accused allegedly raped the girl. Whether she was forced to drink alcohol is yet to be ascertained,” Kozhikode Kasaba police Station SHO Prajeesh N, who led the investigation, told South First.
The girl regained consciousness at around 2 am on Sunday and called a friend for help. She was subsequently taken home.
The incident came to light when the college authorities noticed changes in the behaviour of the girl and counselled her. The authorities then alerted the parents of the girl about the incident.
She, along with her parents, filed a complaint and gave a statement at the Kasaba station on Monday, based on which the police initiated the investigation.
