Kerala’s municipalities have made remarkable progress in the Swachh Survekshan 2024, with eight cities entering the top 100 cleanest urban local bodies in India—an achievement unmatched in the previous year. Kochi Corporation led the charge, jumping from rank 416 in 2023 to 50 this year, marking one of the biggest improvements nationwide.

Other Kerala cities in the top 100 include Mattannur (53), Thrissur (58), Kozhikode (70), Alappuzha (80), Guruvayur (82), Thiruvananthapuram (89), and Kollam (93). Mattannur received a national award as a Promising Swachh City, climbing from 1,854 to 53.

Kerala also saw 23 municipalities receive Garbage-Free City star ratings, with Alappuzha, Pattambi, and Shoranur securing 3-star statuses.

Thiruvananthapuram earned a Water+ certification, and 77 municipalities achieved ODF+ status, while Kalpetta and two others received ODF++ certifications.

Minister M.B Rajesh credited the Malinyamuktham Nava Keralam campaign, launched after the 2023 Brahmapuram fire, for driving this transformation. Key contributors included Suchitwa Mission, Haritha Keralam, Kudumbashree, and the Clean Kerala Company.

The awards were presented by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in Delhi.
