Synopsis: Medical findings reportedly confirmed serious injuries to the child’s private parts, indicating that she had been subjected to sexual abuse prior to her death. Nearly a month after a 33-year-old man and his six-year-old daughter were found dead in their rented house at Elamakkara in Kochi, the investigation has taken a grave turn with the police registering a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The father and daughter were discovered on January 16 at their rented residence in Ponekkara.
According to the First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Elamakkara police, the man was found hanging from the ceiling, while the child was lying dead on a bed.
Initial investigations had indicated that the father may have killed the child before ending his own life.
However, the post-mortem examination of the girl has revealed evidence of sexual assault, prompting the registration of a POCSO case.
Medical findings reportedly confirmed serious injuries to the child’s private parts, indicating that she had been subjected to sexual abuse prior to her death.
The report also suggests the possibility of prolonged abuse. Police officials have confirmed the POCSO case but have refrained from disclosing further details or naming a suspect, stating that the investigation remains ongoing.
Sources indicate that investigators suspect the father in connection with the alleged assault, though officials emphasised that conclusions can only be drawn after a comprehensive probe.
There are also reports that the man, who worked as a salesman and had reportedly been staying at home for some time, was struggling with substance abuse issues.
Authorities are continuing to examine all aspects of the case to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the deaths including financial liabilities.
