KPCC president Sunny Joseph has taken serious note of a clash involving Chirayinkeezhu MLA Ramya Haridas and Congress leaders, and ordered an internal inquiry into the incident.
A three-member committee headed by former KPCC president MM Hasan has been appointed to investigate the matter and submit a report.
KPCC general secretary Ramani P Nair, who was in charge of the constituency during the election, and Neyyattinkara Sanal are the other members of the committee.
Joseph said the organisational etiquette expected of party members was not followed in the incident and assured that strong and uncompromising action would be taken against those found responsible.
It’s learnt that the decision to appoint the committee was taken after consultations with senior leaders, including Ramesh Chennithala, during a training programme at IIM-Kozhikode.
The committee has reportedly directed representatives of both sides to appear before it in person on Sunday, 6 September, as part of the preliminary inquiry.
The move comes amid public allegations and counter-allegations between the two factions in Chirayinkeezhu.
Meanwhile, the Chirayinkeezhu police have registered a case against 14 people based on a complaint lodged by Ramya Haridas.
The case names Congress leaders and representatives Sajith Muttappalam, Sajad, Binoy, Adhish, Vishwanath and Sajesh, along with eight others identified by sight.
Following the MLA’s allegation that she was assaulted, provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act have also been invoked.
Ramya Haridas had sought treatment at the Taluk Hospital, following which police recorded her statement and registered the case.
The Congress leadership is seeking to address the dispute through the party’s organisational mechanism and prevent the matter from escalating further into legal proceedings and arrests.
The final course of action is expected to be decided after the committee submits its report.
