A woman police officer in Kerala has been suspended and booked for allegedly misappropriating over ₹16 lakh collected from traffic fines over a four-year period. Shanti Krishnan, a Senior Civil Police Officer (SCPO) who served at the Muvattupuzha police station from 2018 to 2022, is accused of forging records and embezzling public funds.

According to the FIR filed on July 21, Krishnan faces multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code, including forgery, criminal breach of trust, and cheating, in addition to violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Investigators allege that while performing duties as an assistant station writer, Krishnan tampered with official cash records by under-reporting the amount of fines collected and siphoning off the difference.

She was responsible for logging fine payments and depositing them into the department’s account but reportedly manipulated figures to pass audits unnoticed.

The financial irregularities came to light during internal audits, which triggered a deeper inquiry. Following the discovery, she was suspended from duty and will also be subjected to a departmental investigation alongside the criminal case.
