MR Ajithkumar, IPS

The Kerala Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau is preparing to submit a report acquitting Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) MR Ajithkumar for several allegations raised against him.

Allegations against the IPS officer include illegal property acquisition, construction of a luxury residence in Kowdiar, the sale of a flat in Kuravankonam — both in Thiruvananthapuram — and unauthorised tree felling at the Malappuram Superintendent of Police’s (SP) camp office.

The investigation found no substantial evidence to validate these accusations and cleared Ajithkumar of wrongdoing. Recently, the state Cabinet approved the elevation of Ajithkumar to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP).

The report

The report, which will soon be handed over to DGP Sheikh Darvesh Saheb, highlighted the lack of concrete proof to substantiate the allegations raised by Nilambur MLA PV Anvar, particularly in connection with the gold smuggling allegations.

Vigilance officials who probed Ajithkumar’s financial transactions and property dealings failed to uncover any incriminating evidence.

Addressing the allegations about the construction of a luxury house in Kowdiar, the report specifies that Ajithkumar had secured a loan of ₹1.5 crore from the State Bank of India (SBI) for the project.

It further clarifies that the construction and the property were duly declared to the government as part of the official property information list.

Similarly, suspicions surrounding the resale of a flat within ten days, allegedly as part of a black money transaction, were dismissed due to the absence of supporting evidence.

Clear SP Sujith Das

The investigation also assessed claims implicating Malappuram SP Sujith Das in gold smuggling activities through Karipur airport.

Instead of finding fault, the investigation commended Sujith Das’s tenure, noting that it was marked by a record number of gold seizures at airports.

The clean chit comes amidst mounting controversy over Ajithkumar’s recent promotion to the rank of DGP. With the Vigilance report clearing the air, the government is expected to rely on these findings to justify the promotion and address public scepticism.

Ajithkumar was facing separate investigations into the Thrissur pooram fiasco, clandestine meetings with RSS leaders, and amassing assets disproportionate to his income.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had ordered the DGP to conduct an inquiry into the allegations concerning the conduct of the Thrissur pooram.
