Synopsis: Kerala is examining the scope for legislation to curb the online misuse of women’s images, Minister for Women and Child Development Bindu Krishna has said. The minister said she was photographed from objectionable angles during a public function in Kollam earlier this month and that the images were shared on social media before being deleted.

Kerala Minister for Women and Child Development Bindu Krishna has said the State government is examining the possibility of introducing legislation to curb the online misuse of women’s images. She said she herself was subjected to vulgar filming during a public function in Kollam earlier this month.

While attending a Higher Secondary School entrance ceremony in Kollam on 6 July, a person allegedly used a mobile phone to take photographs of her from objectionable angles. The minister said another person at the venue noticed what was happening and immediately intervened.

Even so, Krishna said the images were uploaded on social media before being deleted following public outrage. “People had already taken screenshots by then, and it became a major issue,” the minister said.

“If they can do this to a minister at a school function, what would be their attitude towards the children studying there?”

Krishna alleged that several online channels routinely circulate sexually suggestive visuals of women, particularly celebrities attending public events. She added that the government viewed such practices with the utmost seriousness and would examine the scope for introducing legal provisions to curb such content.
