Kerala psychologists celebrate ‘Psychologist Appreciation Day’, seek official recognition
The community hopes the government will soon give due recognition to this day — both to honour psychologists and to reinforce the significance of mental health in society
Though not officially declared in Kerala, Psychologist Appreciation Day is being observed and celebrated by psychologists across the state. Professionals in the field say the day is crucial in recognising the growing role of psychologists in today’s society.
Dr. Sany Varghese, President of the Indian Association of Clinical Psychologists (Kerala Region), told South First that the contributions of psychologists are more relevant than ever.
”Issues like drug abuse, suicide, family conflict, and violence are on the rise. The role of psychologists in addressing these is invaluable,” she said.
Highlighting the need for formal recognition, Dr. Varghese explained that Psychologist Appreciation Day is a moment to thank licensed mental health professionals for their work in helping individuals navigate life’s challenges.
”Social workers, doctors, and nurses all have special days. But psychologists, despite their impact, are often overlooked,” she said.
The day is currently marked on July 14, inspired by the birthday of Dr. Lonny Meier — a clinical psychologist with over four decades of service, including 28.5 years at the U.S. Veterans Affairs and five years in the U.S. Navy.
Dr. Varghese also noted that Kerala psychologists have urged the government to introduce psychology as a subject in higher secondary education.
”It can aid in self-awareness, early intervention, and also inspire students to consider psychology as a career,” she added.
The community hopes the government will soon give due recognition to this day — both to honour psychologists and to reinforce the significance of mental health in society.
