Kerala Police’s Facebook page crosses 20 lakh followers, becomes global leader in social media policing

In a landmark achievement, the Kerala Police Facebook page has crossed the 20-lakh follower mark as of 15 July, making it the most followed police force page not only in India but globally.

Launched in 2011, the page had a modest one lakh followers by January 2019.

But its transformation into a model of new-age digital policing began soon after — catching the attention of none other than Microsoft, which studied its social media strategy to explore how law enforcement can effectively engage the public in the digital era.

What sets the page apart is its witty and relatable content — a far cry from the usual government communication style.

From filmy dialogues and tongue-in-cheek taglines to catchy background scores and viral memes, the page blends humour with serious messaging.

It cleverly uses trending topics and trolls to spotlight law-and-order issues, often making headlines of its own.

The page is managed by the Deputy Director of the State Police Media Centre under the supervision of the Cyber Operations Division.

Alongside the main page, the State Police Media Centre’s FB handle and other platforms also contribute to this innovative public outreach.

With every like and share, Kerala Police is reshaping digital policing.
