Maradu Aneesh arrest

Synopsis: The Kochi City Police arrested notorious gang leader Maradu Aneesh, an accused in multiple criminal cases across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Aneesh will first be produced in court for the 2005 case to execute a long-pending warrant issued for his failure to appear in court.

The Kochi City Police in the Ernakulam district of Kerala on Thursday, 15 January, arrested notorious gang leader Maradu Aneesh, an accused in multiple criminal cases across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The arrest was accidental. A team of officials from the North Paravur Police Station, probing a honey trap case, spotted Aneesh in a house within the Mulavukad Police Station limits.

After alerting senior officers, the Mulavukad police detained him and transferred him to Kochi Central Police Station to execute a long-pending warrant from a 2005 case, issued for his failure to appear in court.

Tamil Nadu police tracking the accused

The timing is significant as a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Tamil Nadu police is currently in Kochi, tracking Aneesh in connection with a major gold-smuggling vehicle hijack near Coimbatore’s Chavadi.

Aneesh had recently courted controversy by alleging that Tamil Nadu police planned to kill him in a fake encounter instead of prosecuting him.

He cited past violent incidents involving his gang, including the 2012 police shooting of aide Sinoj and the death of associate Pratheesh Varghese in a Tamil Nadu jail last year.

Despite the presence of the Tamil Nadu squad, Kerala police have clarified that they will strictly follow jurisdictional procedures. Aneesh will first be produced in court for the 2005 case.
