Synopsis: Kerala Police arrested five students of the Government College of Nursing Kottayam for allegedly subjecting first-year students to brutal ragging. It is said that the accused have subjected the first-year students to brutal harassment for more than three months. The college authorities have also suspended them
The Kerala Police arrested five students of the Government College of Nursing in Gandhinagar of the Kottayam district for allegedly subjecting first-year students to brutal ragging, sources said on Wednesday, 12 February.
The arrested students have been identified as Samuel, a native of Munnilavu in Kottayam, Jiva, a native of Nadavayal in Wayanad, Rijil Jith, a native of Mancheri in Malappuram, Rahul Raj, a native of Wandoor in Malappuram, and Vivek, a native of Koruthdu in Kottayam.
Police said the accused will be produced before the magistrate by Wednesday afternoon. The college authorities have also suspended the five students. The college principal took action after investigating the Anti-Ragging Act.
It is said that the accused have subjected the first-year students to brutal harassment for more than three months.
The survivors had been remaining silent due to fear of retaliation. Finally, three first-year students approached the police after enduring extreme physical and mental abuse.
According to the complaint filed at the Gandhinagar Police Station, third-year students forced their juniors to lift dumbbells using their private parts. They inflicted injuries with sharp objects, including a compass.
When South First contacted the Gandhinagar police, they stated that the arrest procedures were underway and that further details would be provided later.
