Senior Congress leader and MP Kodikkunnil Suresh turned emotional while speaking at the Dalit Progressive National Conclave on Sunday, 23 March, as he opened up about the challenges he continues to face despite representing a reserved constituency.
Suresh, one of the most prominent Dalit leaders in Kerala, hinted at deeper issues within the political and social system, stating that if he were to reveal more, it could spark a major political controversy.
His remarks have drawn immediate responses from Dalit activists, many of whom have begun discussing the implications of his statement.
His speech came after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar inaugurated the conclave, emphasizing the need for a change in societal attitudes toward Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to achieve real upliftment.
Wayanad District Collector’s ‘Good Morning Collector’ programme is making waves as a unique initiative fostering direct interaction between students and the administration.
Launched to instil civic responsibility and leadership qualities, the program allows students to engage in governance discussions, voice concerns, and propose solutions to societal issues.
Held every, Wednesday at 9.30 am, the initiative welcomes students from various institutions to meet the Collector, offering a platform for open dialogue on administrative and social challenges. Many students, particularly from marginalised communities, have contributed valuable insights, pushing for more inclusive governance.
The program has significantly enhanced students’ confidence, problem-solving abilities, and awareness of governance processes. It also aligns with the District Collector’s Internship Programme (DCIP), further integrating youth into policymaking.
By bridging the gap between young minds and governance, Good Morning Collector, is shaping a generation of socially responsible citizens, setting a model for participatory administration.
A woman suffered an acid attack at the Cheruvannur Ayurveda Hospital in Kozhikode.
The victim, Prabisha from Balussery, was attacked by her ex-husband, Shibin. Police have detained Shibin, while Prabisha has been shifted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital for treatment.
A dispute over parking at a bar in Chadayamangalam resulted in the murder of Sudheesh(35), a CITU-affiliated loading worker, on Saturday night. The police have arrested Jibin, a security guard at the bar, in connection with the incident.
Sudheesh and his friends, Shanavas and Ambady, were denied parking inside the bar’s premises due to ongoing construction. Following their visit to the bar, Shanavas and Ambady engaged in an altercation with Jibin. Sudheesh intervened, at which point Jibin fatally stabbed him and injured the other two.
Shanavas, who was initially in critical condition, is now stable.
In response to the incident, the CPI(M) local committee declared a hartal in Chadayamangalam on Sunday.
The Kerala government has approved an additional instalment of social security and welfare fund pensions for beneficiaries in March, allocating a total of ₹817 crore.
Approximately 62 lakh recipients will receive ₹1,600 each, with disbursements beginning on Thursday. More than 26 lakh beneficiaries will have the amount directly credited to their bank accounts, while others will receive it at home through cooperative banks.
Additionally, the central government is responsible for providing the central share of the National Pension Scheme to 8,46,456 individuals.
To ensure timely payments, the state has set aside ₹24.31 crore in advance. This amount is transferred to beneficiaries’ bank accounts via the central government’s PFMS system.
