Mami missing ADGP Ajith Kumar

Kerala Chief Minster’s Office (CMO) constituted a team reporting to Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Crime Branch H Venkatesh to probe the case related to the missing of Mohammad Attur, known as Mami, a real estate businessman from Kozhikode.

The move came after LDF MLA PV Anvar on Saturday, 7 September, released a copy of the letter he wrote to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in which he raised several serious allegations against ADGP (Law and Order) MR Ajith Kumar.

Anvar asserted that he has evidence supporting his claims, which he plans to hand over to the Crime Branch investigation team.

The independent MLA supporting the CPI(M)-led government in the state also hinted at the possibility that Mami may have been murdered.

Anvar, who clarified that he did not know Mami personally before this case, and expressed confidence in the newly formed Crime Branch investigation led by Inspector General (IG) P Prakash of the Kozhikode Range with the team including, Preman U, Sharon CS, Ratheesh Kumar R, Abhilash P, Siby Thomas.

He urged Mami’s family to temporarily withdraw their demand for a CBI inquiry and allow the Crime Branch to conduct their investigation.

Mami went missing on 21 August, 2023, with his last known mobile location recorded near Thalakkulathur in Kozhikode on the next day afternoon (22 August, 2023).

Despite extensive efforts, a special investigation team failed to make any breakthroughs.

The state police chief subsequently ordered the case be transferred to the Crime Branch, following recommendations from Malappuram SP S Sasidharan, who led the initial investigation and suggested the case be handed over to the CBI.

Mami’s family had also requested a CBI probe, and their plea is currently under consideration by the Kerala High Court.

They have alleged that the initial investigation faced high-level interference, raising further concerns about the case’s handling.

Publicly released the complaint

CPI(M) State Secretary MV Govindan stated that Anvar’s allegations and complaints should not be made public.

However, soon after this statement, Anvar publicly released the complaint he had previously submitted to the chief minister and the party secretary.

Govindan mentioned that the complaint contained nothing against P Sasi, the chief minister’s political secretary, but Anvar countered by saying he would file a new complaint specifically naming Sasi.

He also announced that he would provide a statement to the special investigation team regarding Sasi.

Anvar’s complaint to the chief minister and the party secretary outlined 14 issues that require investigation. He warned that if the investigation was superficial and aimed at protecting anyone, it would be exposed.

The complaint includes allegations of police involvement in the gold smuggling case and claims of phone tapping of ministers, allegedly led by Ajith Kumar.

Anvar indicated that he has more information to reveal, posing a serious challenge to the investigation team and the government.

The letter to the chief minister

He stated his complaint that he started to uncover details regarding Ajith Kumar after the Kerala Police failed to take action against Shajan Scaria, owner of the YouTube channel Marunadan Malayali.

Anvar claimed that the police were lapsing into taking action against Scaria even after spreading fake news and hate.

Anvar said even after the latter violated section 66F (Cyber terrorism) of the Information Technology Act, the police imposed only Section 66 B (Punishment for dishonestly receiving stolen computer resource or communication device).

He also linked the alleged gold smuggling connection of Ajith Kumar to the murder of Malappuram native Ridan Basil. He claimed that the police coerced and threatened the deceased’s wife to give a statement in line with what they wanted.

The MLA also urged the chief minister to investigate the ADGP’s involvement in disrupting the Thrissur Pooram this year.
