Synopsis: Biju NT, 54, from Ernakulam, died after a keyhole surgery for back pain at Rajagiri Hospital, Kochi, triggering medical negligence allegations. His brother claimed Biju developed severe abdominal pain post-surgery, later found to be internal bleeding. Despite a second surgery, he didn’t regain consciousness. Police have registered an unnatural death case and launched an investigation.

Biju NT, a 54-year-old resident of Kadungamangalam in Ernakulam district, has died following a keyhole surgery for backpain, triggering allegations of medical negligence against Rajagiri Hospital in Aluva, Kochi.

According to the complaint filed by Biju’s younger brother, Binu Thomas, the patient was admitted to Rajagiri on 25 June for treatment under a neurosurgeon, after being diagnosed with a nerve compression between spinal discs.

Biju had first consulted a doctor at Medical Trust Hospital in Kochi around ten days earlier when he developed back pain.

Following the diagnosis, he sought expert care and underwent surgery at Rajagiri on 27 June.

However, soon after being moved to his room post-surgery, Biju began experiencing severe stomach pain, and his abdomen became noticeably swollen, said Binu.

Although a gastroenterologist diagnosed it as a gastric issue and prescribed medication, Biju’s condition deteriorated rapidly. With his blood pressure dropping, he was shifted to the ICU.

Further tests revealed internal bleeding in his abdomen, following which a second surgery was performed to remove the accumulated blood. Despite the medical interventions, Biju never regained consciousness after the second procedure, Binu alleged.

He has accused the hospital of negligence in both diagnosis and post-operative care.

When South First contacted Edathala police, they said that, they have registered a case of unnatural death under the BNSS and launched an investigation into the incident.
