Kerala launches statewide e-waste collection drive

Local Self-Government and Excise Minister M.B. Rajesh on Tuesday inaugurated a state-level e-waste collection drive, highlighting the growing threat posed by electronic waste to public health.

Speaking at the event in Amaravila in Thiruvananthapuram, the minister said waste management is no longer just an environmental issue but a critical public health concern.

The minister noted that in 2024-25 alone, the Haritha Karma Sena collected over 66,000 tonnes of waste across the state, preventing potential health hazards.

He added that Kerala’s waste management model has gained national attention, being featured in the Union Government’s Economic Survey, while states like Tamil Nadu are now adopting similar practices.

Rajesh urged the public to overcome misconceptions about waste treatment plants, stating that facilities like the toilet waste treatment plant in Muttathara function safely without adverse effects. He also stressed the importance of collecting user fees, including fines, through local bodies alongside property taxes, with defaulters denied local government benefits under the amended law.The new initiative allows Haritha Karma Sena to collect harmful e-waste from households for a fixed rate, setting a model for responsible waste management
