Kerala, ICMR launch joint research project to boost mental health of students

The collaborative research initiative will focus on identifying and addressing psychological distress among students and formulating preventive strategies.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has partnered with the Government of Kerala for a national-level research project aimed at improving the mental health of school and college students and preventing suicides. An ICMR expert team led by Dr Ashu Grover, Head of the Implementation Research Division, visited the state and held discussions with Health Minister Veena George.

The team praised Kerala’s strides in public health, particularly in the areas of women’s and children’s development. They also appreciated the state’s proactive approach in tackling mental and social health challenges among children and youth.

The collaborative research initiative will focus on identifying and addressing psychological distress among students and formulating preventive strategies. It is being implemented through coordinated efforts by the Health and Women and Child Development Departments.

A co-development workshop chaired by Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Dr Rajan N Khobragade brought together officials from ICMR, Health, General Education, Higher Education, and Police departments. ADGP P Vijayan and Additional Director of Health Services Dr Meenakshi were among the key participants.

ICMR scientists Dr Neha Dahiya and Dr Pulkit Verma, Dr. P.S. Indu (Kasaragod Government Medical College), and Dr TV Anil Kumar (Ernakulam Government Medical College) also took part in the discussions.
