Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan, as Chancellor of universities in the state, on Thursday terminated the services of two Vice-Chancellors (VCs) in the state.

The two VCs — MK Jayaraj and MV Narayanan of the University of Calicut and the Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, respectively — were asked to vacate their posts as their appointments were found to be in violation of the regulations of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

Earlier, several VCs of the state had approached the Kerala High Court after they were issued show cause notices by the Governor asking why they should not be removed from their posts.

‘Appointment of VCs violated UGC norms’

The Governor was of the view that their appointments were in violation of the UGC norms.

The high court, while hearing the pleas in January, had asked the Governor to schedule a hearing with the VCs within six weeks.

The court also directed that the Governor’s order on the show cause notices cannot be implemented for 10 days from the date of passing them.

The Governor’s move to act against the VCs came in the backdrop of a Supreme Court verdict in October 2022 which quashed the appointment of Dr MS Rajashree as the VC of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University on the ground that her appointment was contrary to UGC regulations.

No official statement has been released from the Governor’s Office yet.
