A portion of the building collapsed at 10.45 am on 3 July.
The Kerala government on Friday, 4 July, announced emergency financial assistance of ₹50,000 for the family of Bindu, who died in the building collapse at the Kottayam Government Medical College Hospital. The aid was declared by Minister for Ports and Ettumanoor MLA VN Vasavan amid ongoing Opposition protests.
Defending the government’s response, Vasavan rejected allegations of delays in launching the search operation and accused the Opposition of spreading misinformation for political mileage.
He also pointed out that concerns about the building’s poor condition had been raised during the previous UDF government’s tenure, which, he said, failed to initiate any action for constructing a new facility.
While the deceased woman’s husband claimed no ministers or officials had reached out, Vasavan countered that he had tried to call the family three times the previous day, but no one was home.
The minister added that government representatives had been in touch with the family, and several of their concerns, including the demand for a swift post-mortem, were addressed.
He also assured that other requests, such as continued medical support for the woman’s daughter and further compensation, would be considered by the government
