Kerala confirms 5th case of Monkeypox, this time in Malappuram

Yet another UAE returnee to Kerala tested positive on Tuesday, marking it the seventh case of Monkeypox in India.

A 32-year-old man who arrived at the Kozhikode International Airport on 27 July from the UAE was hospitalised a day after showing symptoms of Monkeypox in Malappuram.

Health Minister Veena George on Tuesday, 2 August, said samples from the patient tested positive at the National Virology Lab in Pune earlier in the day. He is currently under treatment at a private hospital in Malappuram.

According to the health officials, the patient’s parents and two friends have been advised to go into isolation, and the health department is keeping a close eye on them.

Fifth case in Kerala

Out of eight cases of Monkeypox in the country, Kerala has reported five cases, including death and three in New Delhi.

The demise of a 22-year-old from the Thrissur district on Saturday was on Monday confirmed as the first Monkeypox death in India.

The first case of Monkeypox was reported in the Kollam district on 14 July.

The patient was undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in the state capital Thiruvananthapuram, and was discharged after recovering from the virus.

The second Monkeypox case was reported from the Kannur district on 18 July.

According to the Health Department, the 31-year-old patient, who arrived from Dubai on 13 July, was admitted to the Pariyaram Medical College hospital the next day after he developed rashes on his body.

The third case was reported in Malappuram in Kerala on 22 July.

According to the state health official, both these patients were showing improvement under treatment.

A 35-year-old African national living in Delhi for the last few years and with no recent travel history tested positive for Monkeypox on Tuesday. He is being treated at an isolation ward of government-run LNJP Hospital.
