prosecution alleged that KS Sabarinadhan conspired and motivated his three followers to murder the Kerala chief minister.

A Kerala court on Tuesday, 19 July, granted bail to youth Congress vice-president and former legislator KS Sabarinadhan a few hours after he was arrested by the police for allegedly “plotting a murder attempt” on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inside an Indigo Airlines flight on 13 June.

The principal session court in Thiruvananthapuram granted conditional bail to the Congress leader, saying that custodial interrogation of the petitioner was not required in the case as reports did not reveal any conspiracy.

Prosecution argument

The prosecution alleged that Sabarinadhan conspired and motivated his three followers to murder the Kerala chief minister and aided them to board the flight on which Vijayan was travelling.

However, Sabarinadhan’s lawyer argued that the charges slapped against his client were politically motivated and he was maliciously arrested by the police after he received a notice.

The former legislator was arrested by the Kerala Police around 10:30 am in morning.

Chief minister’s claim

The chief minister, while addressing the Assembly a few minutes after Sabarinadhan’s arrest, claimed that the youth Congress leader had motivated his followers to attack him.

Quoting a message in Malayalam making the rounds on the Youth Congress state committee’s WhatsApp group, Vijayan said, “The chief minister is all set to travel to Thiruvananthapuram from Kannur by air. If two activists manage to board the flight and stage a black flag protest, they will not be thrown out of the aircraft.”

The chief minister added that Sabarinadhan’s supporters, after pushing the cabin crew, rushed towards him with nefarious intentions and he managed to escape the attack only because LDF convener EP Jayarajan blocked their path.

Vijayan claimed that his security officer and aide were injured in the mele.

“No political outfit working within the boundaries of the Indian Constitution would resort to such extreme methods,” the chief minister added.

The Kerala Police on 13 June had arrested three people from Thiruvananthapuram airport on charges of attacking the chief minister. The court had earlier granted bail to the three, all supporters of Sabarinadhan.
