Minor assaulted

A 10-year-old girl sleeping in her house in Kasaragod was abducted, robbed of her gold earrings, and abandoned in a nearby paddy field during the wee hours of Wednesday, 15 May.

As the incident came to light, the police registered a case of abduction and robbery. After a consequent inquiry by the police, it was found that the girl was sexually assaulted.

The Hosdurg police took three people into custody on Thursday, 16 May, and found that the accused have links with the drug mafia.

The police also doubt that the assaulter might be known to the family as he knows their routine.

The assaulter is also suspected to know the area very well, as he had told the girl that she could reach her house after going past three to four houses.

The girlchild who is currently undergoing treatment at Kanjanghad District Hospital is said to have told the police that one of the assaulters “talks Malayalam and looks thin.”

A special team is investigating the case and is being monitored by DIG Thomson Jose IPS.

The Kerala State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KeSCPCR) on Wednesday, sought an urgent report from the police over the shocking incident and also sought a medical report of the girl.

The incident

The incident happened after 3 am on 15 May when the girl’s grandfather got out of the house to milk his three cows. When he returned around 3.30 am, he found the girl missing from the bed.

They said the grandfather used to go out after closing the door but never locked it.

The other family members including the victim’s father, mother and sister were sleeping in another room in the same house, they said.

The assaulter took the girl away through the kitchen door. A search ensued, and the girl was found.

Abandoned in a paddy field, the hapless girl knocked on the door of a house nearby and called her father from a phone of the residents there.

Quoting the girl, her family said that an unidentified man had taken her outside the house, threatening to kill her if she raised the alarm.

“We spoke to the child’s mother, and also sought a report from the police in this regard. We assured the family all support and necessary assistance. The girl is said to be OK now,” KeSCPCR Chairperson K V Manoj said.
