Kozhikode Medical College Police on Wednesday, 21 January, took Shimjitha Mustafa, the prime accused in the case related to the suicide of Deepak, a native of Govindapuram, following allegations of sexual assault made through an Instagram reel, into custody from a relative’s house at Vadakara.
The First Class Magistrate Court, Kunnamangalam, remanded Shimjitha Mustafa for 14 days. She will be lodged at Sub Jail Perinthalmanna.
She has been charged for abetment of suicide, and the arrest came six days after the incident.
Deepak was found dead at his home early on Sunday, 18 January. Relatives and friends said Deepak was under severe mental distress after the video’s circulation. His family alleged that he was subjected to character assassination and claimed the video was created for social media attention. However, she stated that her case is genuine.
Meanwhile, she had approached the Kozhikode District Court seeking anticipatory bail.
Police are also continuing to collect evidence, including additional video footage, and are recording statements from private bus employees who had travelled with Deepak and Shimjitha.
The incident allegedly took place on a private bus, Al Amin, which operates via Payyannur Railway Station.
CCTV visuals obtained by the police show Deepak boarding the bus through the front door and Shimjitha entering through the rear door at the railway station bus stop.
However, it’s said, the footage from inside the bus mainly captures the crowd and does not clearly show the alleged incident.
The bus conductor, Ramakrishnan, and driver, Prakash, have told the police that they did not notice any such incident occurring during the journey.
