Kerala-based haematologist Dr KA Salim passes away at the age of 86

Synopsis: Eminent haematologist Dr KA Salim passed away at the age of 86. Dr Salim established the Department of Haematology at Kozhikode Medical College in Kerala and mentored generations of medical students across the state.

Eminent haematologist Dr KA Salim passed away at the age of 86 on Tuesday, 17 February. A pioneer in haematology, Dr Salim notably established the Department of Haematology at Kozhikode Medical College in Kerala and mentored generations of medical students across the state.

His contributions to medical education were widely acclaimed, and he played a key role in shaping government medical colleges in the state.

Distinguished academic

A distinguished academic, he earned his MBBS from Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1963 and an MD in General Medicine in 1966.

He later pursued advanced training abroad, obtaining postgraduate qualifications from the Royal College of Physicians, London (1978), and the Royal College of Pathologists, London (1982), along with several other international fellowships.

Dr Salim also served as an associate professor at the College of Medicine, King Khalid University, Saudi Arabia and worked as a consultant with the UK’s National Health Service in London.

He is survived by his children Dr. Shafeeq (Birmingham, UK), Rafiq (Saudi Arabia), Dr Ashiq, and Dr Sajik (UK). The funeral will be held on Wednesday at Pettah Juma Masjid in Thiruvananthapuram.
