Kerala approves river basin conservation management framework

The Kerala government has approved the River Basin Conservation Management Framework to enhance water resource management in the state.

The initiative aims to ensure efficient, sustainable, and integrated management of river basins through multi-level governance, strategic resource planning, and rigorous monitoring.

It was the Cabinet meeting that convened on 25 June which approved the framework.

An Apex Committee, chaired by the Chief Minister, will oversee the framework’s implementation.

It will include ministers from key departments such as Water Resources, Environment, Forest, Agriculture, Finance, and Tourism, along with the Vice Chairman and Chief Secretary of the State Planning Board.

The Additional Chief Secretary of the Water Resources Department will act as the convener.

A Steering Committee, headed by the Chief Secretary, and a Technical Committee, chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary of Water Resources, will manage operational aspects.

Below that there will be another committee with the District Collector of that district having the larger area of the river basin
will serve as chairman, with other concerned Collectors as co-chairmen.
