The rice-laden truck was bound for Andhra Pradesh when the collision occurred.
Out of the five people, four belonged to the Thiruvananthapuram district and the fifth person was a native of the Kollam district.
The police said all five were contractual employees at the canteen of ISRO in Thiruvananthapuram and were on their way to attend a wedding. The people were identified as Shijin Das (24), Manu (24), Prasad (25), Amal (28) and Sumod.
“The accident occurred at around 1.30 am. All five passengers died. The driver and the cleaner of the lorry are under custody,” the police said.
Police sources said four of them died on the spot while one person succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.
The CCTV visuals of the accident show the car, which got out of control, ramming into the truck. Prima facie, the car was speeding.
The bodies have been shifted to Alappuzha Medical College and will be handed over to the relatives after the post-mortem.
