Kannur jail's museum plans takes shape

As India marks the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, the Kannur Central Jail stands as a silent witness to the era’s dark memories. Between 1975 and 1977, the prison held 385 detainees, including political leaders, activists, and students, many jailed without knowing the charges.

Among the prominent leaders imprisoned were Pinarayi Vijayan, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, E K Nayanar, M V Raghavan, and M P Veerendrakumar. Naxalite figures like Civic Chandran and Mandakini Narayanan were also held here. Pinarayi Vijayan, then Kuthuparamba MLA, famously sought parole in 1976 to attend to his critically ill mother.

Former detainee Govinda Varma Raja recalls being jailed at just 18 for protesting as a student. To preserve these histories, prison authorities are now setting up a museum showcasing key events, including the Emergency and the Malabar Rebellion, hoping to open it soon for the public.
