Synopsis: If the Deputy CM post is allotted, senior leader PK Kunhalikutty is considered a frontrunner after his record victory in Malappuram. The party is also evaluating several MLAs from different districts for ministerial roles, taking regional representation into account.

With the Congress-led UDF beginning cabinet formation after its decisive victory, ally IUML is expected to secure a strong share, including the Deputy CM post and around four ministerial berths.

Initial discussions are underway within the party, with detailed deliberations to be led by state president Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal. Encouraged by its performance of winning 22 out of 27 seats, IUML leaders believe they deserve key positions while also recognising the need to accommodate other UDF allies.

The Congress leadership is expected to proceed cautiously, mindful of past tensions, especially the 2011 episode during the government led by Oommen Chandy over IUML’s demand for a fifth minister.

This time, both parties are likely to handle negotiations carefully to avoid friction.
