Internal committees must regain public trust: Women’s Commission chief

Kerala State Women’s Commission chairperson Adv. P. Sathidevi has called for making internal committees in workplaces more efficient and accountable.

She was speaking after inaugurating the district-level adalat organised by the Commission at the Thycaud PWD Rest House in Thiruvananthapuram.

Sathidevi noted that complaints are pouring in about the poor functioning of internal committees formed under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act.

“Some committees are failing to investigate complaints properly, eroding the faith of complainants. This cannot be allowed to continue,” she warned.

The Chairperson also expressed concern over the rising number of boundary disputes between relatives and neighbours, many of them involving limited parcels of land.

Interestingly, one case involving damage to a boundary wall caused by tree roots also came up for consideration.

Sathidevi pointed out that prolonged court disputes in marital issues affect the mental health of children.

The Commission has initiated steps to provide counseling for such children.

One case of divorce due to the husband’s alcoholism was addressed, and efforts were made to admit him to a de-addiction centre.

The two-day adalat considered 300 cases, resolving 44 on the final day.
