IMD warns of heavy rainfall in Kerala for the next five days

The IMD cautions about waterlogging, poor visibility, flooding in low-lying areas, strong winds, and the risk of landslides in hilly regions.

Synopsis: The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for six districts and a yellow alert for the remaining eight districts of Kerala. The rainfall is expected to intensify due to a cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and South Tamil Nadu

With heavy rainfall continuing across Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for six districts — Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Thrissur on Monday, 4 August. The remaining eight districts of the state remain under a yellow alert.

The IMD warns of very heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm in 24 hours under the orange alert, and heavy rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm under the yellow alert.

The rainfall is expected to intensify due to a cyclonic circulation over the Gulf of Mannar and South Tamil Nadu, coupled with strong westerly winds over Kerala and Lakshadweep.

Rainfall to continue

Widespread heavy to extremely heavy rain is likely on Tuesday, with isolated heavy rainfall predicted from Wednesday to Friday across various districts. The state has been witnessing persistent rain since Saturday, across all districts.

Districts under orange alert on Tuesday include Palakkad and Malappuram in addition to the earlier six, while Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod will be under an orange alert on Wednesday, and Kannur and Kasaragod on Thursday

Yellow alerts are in place for multiple districts on all three days.

Meanwhile, high tidal waves up to 1.8 metres caused by swell waves known as ‘kallakkadal‘ are expected along the Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha coasts from Sunday evening to Monday night, according to the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).

Fishermen and residents in coastal areas are advised to stay alert due to the risk of sea incursion. IMD also warned that strong winds with a speed of 40 to 50 kmph are likely at isolated places in Kerala till Thursday.
