Electrocution

In the wake of recent tragic deaths caused by broken electric wires, the Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) directed the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to explore the feasibility of installing technology that automatically cuts off the electricity supply when a wire breaks.

The directive, issued by Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas, follows a suo motu case based on reports of electrocution incidents in Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, and Malappuram districts.

The Commission has demanded a high-level probe into the fatalities and ordered the KSEB Managing Director to submit a report within four weeks. An officer not below the rank of Executive Engineer should conduct the investigation and provide details of the deceased, compensation efforts, and preventive steps.

Meanwhile, the KSEB has decided to formulate a joint action plan with local bodies to eliminate electrical accidents. Efforts will be intensified to trim dangerous trees near power lines, address illegal electric fencing, and ensure scientific wiring in public spaces. KSEB officials stated that insulation of power lines is ongoing, and awareness campaigns will be extended to teachers and institutions.
