Police said Adithyan had claimed to be a 2023-batch Bihar cadre IPS officer and had stepped into police matters in several districts.
Synopsis: A 22-year-old man, Adithyan P Kishore, was arrested in Kottayam for allegedly posing as an IPS officer and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl. His impersonation came to light during a probe into a financial dispute. Police said he had also intervened in cases and allegedly threatened police personnel across three districts.
Cameras flashed as media persons waiting outside the Kottayam East police station captured a tall, well-dressed young man walking out under police watch. At first glance, there was little about 22-year-old Adithyan P. Kishore that suggested he had been at the centre of a bizarre impersonation and an alleged sexual assault against a minor.
For months, police said, Adithyan had allegedly cultivated the image of an IPS officer- using police terminology, official-looking attire, photographs with police vehicles and his claimed position as a 2023-batch Bihar cadre officer to establish credibility.
He allegedly used the identity to intervene in disputes and even intimidate police personnel and others across stations in Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam districts.
The facade began to crumble during an investigation into a separate complaint, which also led to a POCSO case against Adithyan involving a 17-year-old girl.
The impersonation came under scrutiny when a Kottayam Collectorate employee approached authorities with a complaint that she had allegedly lost nearly ₹10 lakh after being promised a job in Israel.
Adithyan had reportedly stepped into the dispute, allegedly threatening the agency owners involved. Police said he subsequently received ₹20,000 from the woman for his intervention.
That payment proved crucial.
When investigators traced the transaction and followed up on the phone number linked to it, the call was answered by a minor girl.
What initially appeared to be a lead in a financial dispute instead opened the door to the POCSO complaint against Adithyan.

Adithyan, a resident of Vadavathoor in Kottayam, allegedly introduced himself to the girl as an IPS trainee. When approached by the police, the girl revealed that she was pregnant after being sexually assaulted by Adithyan.
Based on the complaint of the girl, the Kottayam West police registered a case under the POCSO Act and arrested him on August 29.
Police said Adithyan had claimed to be a 2023-batch Bihar cadre IPS officer and had stepped into police matters in several districts. He allegedly used his familiarity with police language and procedures to make the impersonation appear convincing, while photographs with police vehicles and his manner of presenting himself as an officer further strengthened the claim.
He allegedly contacted police stations, intervened in disputes and threatened police personnel and others by invoking his supposed authority.
In one instance, police said, he even contacted a station claiming to be a CRPF inspector. Investigators said his actual educational qualification was an ITI course in electronics.
Police said Adithyan is also facing cases linked to an alleged ₹1 lakh fraud in connection with solar panel installation and another incident where he allegedly brandished an air gun at a bar.
Investigators are now examining whether the alleged impersonation was limited to the cases already identified or whether Adithyan used the false IPS identity to deceive, threaten or exploit others elsewhere.
A special team headed by Kottayam DySP K.G. Aneesh is investigating the case.
