Nedumbassery police have initiated legal action against actor couple Beena Antony and her husband Manoj, along with actress Swaswika Vijay, following a petition filed by an Aluva-based actress. The complaint alleges that the trio insulted the complainant’s modesty through derogatory comments made on their YouTube channel.
The case has been registered under Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which addresses the insult of a woman’s modesty, and Section 120(o) of the Kerala Police Act, concerning nuisance via communication.
This investigation will be referred to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is currently probing various allegations against film personalities in light of the Hema Committee report.
The Kerala government constituted the Justice Hema Committee after the 2017 actress assault case and its report revealed instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry.
The publication of the Justice K Hema Committee report opened a can of worms with several female actors stepping forward with disturbing accounts of the mistreatment they faced at the hands of their various male counterparts.
The Hema Commission report was made public on 19 August, five years after it was submitted to the Kerala government. The original Hema Committee report is 3,896 pages long
In her complaint, the petitioner stated that Beena and Manoj insulted womanhood through their online remarks.
She had previously filed complaints against several other actors, including Jayasurya, actor-legislator M. Mukesh and former AMMA secretary Edavela Babu, accusing them of making derogatory comments in retaliation for her earlier complaints against industry figures.
