Heavy rains lash Kerala: Three lives lost; property damaged

The mother and son were crushed to death when the wall inside their old house collapsed on them while they were sleeping, the police said.

Heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds lashed many parts of central and northern Kerala, leading loss of three lives, and property damage.

A mother and son were killed when a wall of their house collapsed on the night of Monday, 15 July. The incident was reported from Kottekad in the Vadakkanchery police station limits, in Palakkad district.

The deceased have been identified as Sulochana, 53, and her son Ranjith, 33, according to police.

The local people found them dead on the morning of Tuesday, 16 July.

In another devastating event, 51-year-old Kunjamina in Kannur fell into an unbounded well, likely due to flooding in the area, which obscured her view.

Property damage

The relentless rainfall has left a trail of destruction across the state, causing damage to homes and infrastructure.

Incidents of trees being uprooted and minor landslides were reported from several areas of the central and northern districts, officials said.

Traffic was disrupted on roads, including Ollur in Thrissur after trees were uprooted blocking the road.

In Kottayam, a tree uprooted and fell over Kottayam Ilankavu Temple, resulting in damages worth ₹50 lakh.

The shutters of Malankara and Kallarkutty dams were raised to release excess water, officials said, urging those living on the shores of the Periyar, Muthirappuzha, Thodupuzha, and Muvattupuzha rivers to exercise vigil.

Meanwhile, the IMD has warned that heavy rainfall and gusty wind with speeds reaching 50 kmph are likely to occur at one or two places in the Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam & Thrissur districts.

Moderate rainfall and gusty wind with speeds reaching 40 kmph are likely to occur at one or two places in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam & Wayanad districts.

Moderate rainfall and gusty wind with speeds reaching 50 kmph are likely to occur at one or two places in all other districts of Kerala.
