Changathikkoru Thai initiative by Haritha Keralam Mission on Friendship Day.
In a unique blend of environmental consciousness and emotional bonding, the Haritha Keralam Mission is set to mark World Friendship Day on 3 August with a heartwarming initiative — Changathikkoru Thai (a sapling for a friend) — encouraging people to exchange saplings with friends.
The campaign, part of the popular Let’s Plant a Tree movement, envisions friendship growing into lush greenery across Kerala. Sapling exchanges and planting drives will take place across schools, colleges, offices, libraries, Kudumbashree groups, clubs, and media institutions.
Green groves across the state, already nurtured under the mission, will be expanded, and many new ones will be launched on the day. Vice Chairperson Dr TN Seema said the initiative is tied to Kerala’s ambitious Oru Thai Nadam (Let’s Plant a Tree) campaign to plant one crore saplings by 30 September 2025.
Over 21 lakh saplings have already taken root. The symbolic act of planting a tree in a friend’s name aims to instil environmental responsibility, especially in children, nurturing the bond between people and nature.
August and September will see intensified planting activities by local self-governments, Kudumbashree, MGNREGS, and social forestry wings. Together, friendships and forests will grow strong in Kerala, it’s expected.
