Synopsis: Ambalappuzha MLA-elect G Sudhakaran was sworn in as Pro-tem Speaker of the Kerala Assembly by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Meanwhile, the 16th Kerala Legislative Assembly has been summoned to meet for its first meeting at 9 am on 21 May.
Ambalappuzha MLA-elect G Sudhakaran was sworn in as Pro-tem Speaker of the Kerala Assembly by Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the Lok Bhavan on Wednesday, 20 May.
Chief Minister VD Satheesan was present on the occasion.
“The Governor of Kerala in exercise of the powers vested in him under Article 180 (1) of the Constitution, has been pleased to appoint Shri. G. Sudhakaran (105-Ambalapuzha) to perform the duties of the Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The appointment will take effect immediately before the first meeting of the Sixteenth Kerala Legislative Assembly,” said a notification issued in the Kerala Gazette on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the 16th Kerala Legislative Assembly has been summoned to meet for its first meeting at 9 am on 21 May.
The newly elected members will make and subscribe to the oath or affirmation on that day.
On 22 May, the election for the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker will be held. The Governor will address the Assembly on 29 May.
Satheesan was sworn in as Kerala Chief Minister on Monday at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, marking the UDF’s return to power after a decade. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office to him. His 20-member Cabinet also took the oath of office.
On the same day, he had also unveiled two of the UDF’s much-publicised five guarantees — free travel for women in KSRTC buses and a separate Department for the Welfare of Senior Citizens.
