Forty Fishermen Rescued After Boat Engine Failure off Thrissur Coast
Synopsis: Forty fishermen were rescued after their boat, Thattakathamma, suffered engine failure off the Vadanappally coast. A prompt operation by the Fisheries Department’s Marine Enforcement Wing ensured their safe return
Forty fishermen had a narrow escape on Saturday when their fishing boat, Thattakathamma, suffered an engine failure five nautical miles off the Vadanappally coast in Thrissur district.
The boat, owned by Iringathiruthi Mani of Kazhimbram, had departed from Chetuva Harbour with fishermen from Kazhimbram and Valappad. Midway through the expedition, the boat’s engine stalled, leaving the crew stranded at sea.
Upon receiving an alert at the Azhikode Fisheries Station, the Marine Enforcement and Vigilance Wing of the Fisheries Department launched a swift rescue operation under the direction of Assistant Director Dr. C. Seema. The team, comprising officers V.M. Shaibu, V.N. Prashanthkumar, E.R. Shinilkumar, Coastal Police CPO Avinash, rescue guards Shihab, Ajith, Krishnaprasad, boatman Razak, and driver Rasheed Munakkakadavu, successfully brought all 40 fishermen safely back to shore.
Thrissur District Fisheries Deputy Director Abdul Majeed Pothanuran urged boat owners to ensure regular vessel maintenance, stressing that timely upkeep could prevent such incidents. He also highlighted that the department’s 24-hour Marine Enforcement Units at Munakkakadavu and Azhikode are well-equipped to handle emergencies, offering their services entirely free of charge
