Former Kerala DGP Jacob Thomas
Synopsis: Former Kerala DGP Jacob Thomas has joined the RSS as a full-time pracharak, donning its uniform at a Vijayadashami event in Pallikkara. He aims to foster “culturally strong individuals”, continuing his “fight against corruption” for a robust nation. Thomas, previously with the BJP, follows other retired Kerala IPS officers aligning with the Sangh Parivar.
Former Kerala Police chief Jacob Thomas has joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a full-time ‘pracharak’.
On Vijayadashami, he inaugurated the RSS Pada Sanchalan at Pallikkara, Ernakulam, and later participated in the march in the organisation’s traditional uniform. He described his association with the RSS as a continuation of his commitment to “public service” and his “long fight against corruption”.
Addressing the gathering, Thomas stated that RSS aims to foster culturally strong individuals to build a robust society and nation, free from caste, religion, language, or regional divisions.
Speculation about Thomas’ political and ideological leanings had been rife ever since reports emerged that he was preparing to become more involved in RSS activities.
Thomas, previously the Director of Kerala’s Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, joined BJP in 2021 before recently committing to the RSS. He had earlier contested the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections from Irinjalakuda as a BJP-led NDA candidate.
Over the years, Thomas had also been a participant in several RSS forums and events, but Wednesday’s appearance marked his first public entry in the RSS khaki attire.
By donning the uniform, Thomas has effectively positioned himself as a pracharak-style full-time worker. Thomas, known for his outspoken views against successive governments and his criticisms of corruption during his service career, had often courted controversy.
Notably, former DGP R Sreelekha, Kerala’s first female IPS officer, joined the BJP last year, while former DGP T P Senkumar has also aligned with the Sangh Parivar.
Thomas retired in 2020 after joining the police service in 1987. His move appears to be a continuation of trend among retired Kerala IPS officers.
