Synopsis: Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko has been cleared by a forensic report in a drug case registered by the Kochi City police earlier this year. The case arose after he fled a hotel in Kaloor during a late-night raid by the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force on 16 April, though police later said no drugs or direct evidence of consumption were recovered from the room.
Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko has been cleared by forensic analysis in a drug case registered by the Kochi City police earlier this year.
The case originated following the actor’s dramatic flight from a hotel in Kaloor, within the Ernakulam Town North police station limits, during a late-night raid conducted on 16 April by the District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF).
CCTV visuals later obtained by the police showed Chacko escaping from his third-floor hotel room through a window, landing on the asbestos roofing of the floor below, crossing the swimming pool area, descending the stairs to the reception and leaving the premises as a pillion rider on a two-wheeler.
The incident also came amid ongoing allegations of drug use within the film industry.
Based on initial findings and the suspicious circumstances surrounding the escape, police registered a case against Chacko and Ahmmed Murshad, 25, a Malappuram native who was allegedly present in the room.
They were booked under Section 238 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 27(b) and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
With the forensic report returning negative, the police now have limited scope to pursue the case further. Police sources said no direct evidence suggesting drug consumption or possession was recovered from Chacko’s hotel room.
However, given the manner in which the actor fled the scene, investigators decided to collect and send his body fluid samples for forensic analysis to determine whether he had consumed narcotic substances.
The DANSAF team had reportedly reached the hotel following specific information about the presence of a drug peddler. During verification of the hotel register, they came across Chacko’s name and proceeded to knock on his room door.
Following the incident, the actor was subjected to prolonged questioning, during which he stated that he fled after mistaking the plainclothes officers for criminals and feared for his safety.
Police remained sceptical of this explanation, pointing out that he did not attempt to alert them.
