Filmmaker Shaji N Karun to receive 2023 JC Daniel award for lifetime contribution to Malayalam cinema

Renowned filmmaker Shaji N Karun has been selected to receive the prestigious 2023 JC Daniel Award, the highest honour in Malayalam cinema, in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the industry. 

Culture Minister Saji Cherian announced the award, which includes a cash prize of ₹5 lakh, a citation, and a statue.

The selection committee, chaired by director TV Chandran, and comprising singer KS Chitra, actor Vijayaraghavan, and Chalachitra Academy Secretary C Ajoy, praised Karun’s profound influence on Malayalam cinema. 

The jury particularly highlighted his internationally acclaimed films Piravi, Swaham, and Vanaprastham, which helped bring global recognition to Malayalam cinema.

Shaji N Karun

Born in Kollam in 1952, Shaji N Karun graduated from University College, Thiruvananthapuram, and later earned a diploma in cinematography from the Pune Film Institute. 

Known for his work with the legendary G Aravindan, Karun went on to direct several award-winning films, earning accolades such as seven National Awards, seven State Awards, and honors like the Padma Shri and France’s Order of Arts and Letters.

Currently, Karun serves as the chairman of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC), further cementing his role in shaping the future of Malayalam cinema.
