The Ernakulam–Shoranur MEMU service in Kerala will soon be extended to Nilambur, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced. The decision fulfils a long-standing public demand, especially after the Shoranur–Nilambur line was electrified last year.
Currently, the train departs Ernakulam at 5.35 pm, reaching Shoranur at 8.50 pm, with the return trip starting at 3.30 am. Revised timings for the Nilambur extension are yet to be released. MP PV Abdul Wahab, who had persistently pursued the matter with the railway authorities, expressed happiness that the people’s aspiration is becoming a reality.
The Railways is also considering extending the Coimbatore–Shoranur MEMU to Nilambur and introducing a Nilambur–Shoranur MEMU.
In a separate move, the Nilambur–Kottayam–Nilambur Express will receive two additional coaches, including four new reserved second sitting coaches, from 16 August. Reservations for these seats have already begun, aiming to ease travel demand in the region.
