A blueprint of the project.
Ambulances and rescue vehicles will no longer be stuck at traffic signals on the busy Thiruvananthapuram-Kazhakuttam bypass, thanks to the successful trial of the Emergency Vehicle Priority System (EVPS).
Jointly developed by Natpac and Keltron, EVPS uses wave-based communication between emergency vehicles and traffic signals to give them uninterrupted right of way.
The system was recently tested at the Infosys junction and along the main bypass stretch, showing promising results, said the authorities concerned. The trial revealed a substantial reduction in travel time for emergency vehicles.
For instance, the journey from Kazhakuttam to Venpalavattom was cut from 54 seconds to 40 seconds—a 14-second gain. In the best-case scenario, 24 seconds were saved on a 40-second journey.
On average, over 10 seconds were saved per signal. Officials said the technology not only enables faster response in critical situations but also enhances public transport efficiency. Plans are underway to upgrade the system by extending the range of vehicle detection, allowing even earlier signal intervention.
