The elephant turned violent and went on an 8-km rampage
An elephant killed one person and critically injured two others, including its mahout, at a temple festival in Kerala’s Thrissur district after turning violent and going on an 8-km rampage at around 3 pm on Tuesday, 4 February.
Anand, 38, from Alappuzha, died after being gored by the elephant at the Paingannikal Temple festival in Chittattukara. The elephant, which was in musth, became aggressive while being bathed during the festivities and ran through nearby paddy fields.
The victim, who was unwell and resting in the fields, was unable to flee when the elephant charged at him near the Chittattukara railway gate.
A joint team of elephant squad members and police personnel pursued the animal before successfully tranquilising it in the Kandanassery area.
The temple authorities had brought the elephant from a nearby temple for the festival celebrations.
Officials have shifted the deceased’s body to the Chavakkad Taluk Hospital. The two injured persons are receiving treatment, though their current conditions remain unknown.
