In a rare and complex medical procedure, doctors at the Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, successfully removed a three-metre-long electric insulation wire from the bladder of a 25-year-old man.

The youngster, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, had reportedly inserted the wire through his urethra. By the time he sought medical help, the wire had reached his bladder and become entangled.

A team of specialists from the Urology and Anaesthesia Departments performed the two-and-a-half-hour-long surgery, cutting the wire into pieces before removal. The patient, currently under observation in the ICU, is said to be recovering well. The reason behind the self-insertion remains unclear, hospital authorities said.

Health Minister Veena George congratulated the surgical team for their timely intervention. The procedure was led by Professor Dr PR Saju and Assistant Professor Dr Sunil Ashok, along with several senior residents and anaesthesia experts.
