Synopsis: Officials said Jayasurya had signed a contract with Save Box as its brand ambassador and had inaugurated the app along with other film stars, prompting the agency to seek his deposition as part of the ongoing investigation.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday, 29 December, questioned Malayalam actor Jayasurya in connection with the Save Box online auction app fraud case.
The actor appeared before ED officials at their Kochi office, accompanied by his wife, Saritha.
According to ED sources, Jayasurya was summoned in his capacity as the brand ambassador of the Save Box app.
Investigators are examining the financial transactions between Jayasurya and Swathik Rahim, a native of Thrissur and the prime accused in the case.
This is the second time the actor has been questioned by the ED in relation to the case; he was earlier questioned last Wednesday as well.
Save Box, launched in 2019 and projected as Kerala’s own online auction platform and India’s first of its kind, claimed to offer electronic devices at low prices through online bidding.
Users were required to purchase virtual coins to participate in auctions conducted via the Save Box mobile app.
The company also allegedly collected large sums by promising franchises and shares to investors.
Swathik Rahim was arrested by the Thrissur police following complaints that crores of rupees were siphoned off under the guise of offering Save Box franchises and app-based business opportunities.
There were also allegations that even film personalities were cheated by being given old iPhones repackaged as new ones.
The ED, which began its probe into the case two years ago, is investigating suspected money laundering linked to the fraud.
Officials said Jayasurya had signed a contract with Save Box as its brand ambassador and had inaugurated the app along with other film stars, prompting the agency to seek his deposition as part of the ongoing investigation.
