Renowned Malayalam film director P Balachandrakumar passed away on the early morning of Friday, 13 December at a private hospital in Kerala. He was 62.

Balachandrakumar was the primary witness in the high-profile case over the alleged abduction and assault of a female actor in Kochi. He breathed his last at 5.40 am on Friday at KM Cherian Hospital in Chengannur, where he was undergoing treatment for kidney and heart-related diseases.

Balachandrakumar had been battling with severe health issues for so long. Despite his condition, he remained committed to attending court proceedings related to the assault case, in which he played a crucial role as a witness.

Post-operative infections

Admitted to the hospital on 11 November following severe heart complications, Balachandrakumar underwent bypass surgery two days ago. He, however, developed a post-operative infection.

The director’s body will be transported to Thiruvananthapuram later on Friday for the final rites.

Balachandrakumar’s revelations had a significant impact on the investigation into the assault case involving actor Dileep.

His testimony led to the addition of serious charges, including conspiracy to murder, destruction of evidence, and planning attacks on investigators, against the actor, who was initially charged with rape.

It was Balachandrakumar who made the revelation that the primary accused in the case, Pulsar Suni who allegedly abducted and assaulted the actor, had close ties with Dileep.
