Cyclone Dana: IMD warns of heavy rainfall in Odisha, West Bengal and parts of South India

On Tuesday and Wednesday, 22 and 23 October, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and South Interior Karnataka will face heavy rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh may receive heavy rains and thunderstorms for three days from Monday, 21 October, under the influence of a cyclonic circulation formed over the central Andaman Sea.

Odisha and West Bengal are likely to bear the brunt of Cyclone Dana, named by Qatar. Dana means a beautiful, precious pearl in Arabic.

“It is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression by 22nd October morning and into a cyclonic storm by 23rd October 2024, over East-central Bay of Bengal, the weather department said.

IMD warned of Cyclone Dana making landfall on the Odisha-West Bengal coast early on 24 October. Though the exact location is unknown, it would likely be near Puri.

Rainfall prediction

While parts of West Bengal and Odisha are expected to be impacted the most, with risks of flooding, the peninsular parts of India, are also expected to witness heavy rains and thunderstorms.

The IMD also issued a warning for Monday, 21 October predicting heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, while very heavy rainfall is predicted in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, 22 and 23 October, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and South Interior Karnataka will face heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, the Coastal Andhra Pradesh along with Odisha and West Bengal are expected to face heavy and very heavy rainfall on Thursday and Friday, 24 and 25 October.

IMD Director-General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra in a press release noted that said that the cyclonic circulation is likely to take the shape of a severe cyclonic storm.

He has also advised the fishermen to return to remain on the coast till 25 October.

Heavy rains in Karnataka

The rains have already started battering many parts of Karnataka, mainly affecting Shivamogga and Bengaluru.

Shivamogga has experienced severe flooding for the last 12 hours due to heavy rainfall. It has been severely affected by heavy rain, which has caused widespread disruption. The rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, has affected low-lying regions, causing stormwater drains and channels to overflow into streets and homes.

Gopalagowda Layout, Tank Mohalla, Angalayyanakere Annanagar Ashwath Nagar, and other localities are also flooded.

Similarly, Bengaluru also has been experiencing heavy rains since Sunday. Owing to this, Bengaluru Urban DC Jagadeesha has declared holidays for all the Anganwadi centers, schools, and colleges on Monday, 21 October.

However, the Bengaluru DC has not declared holidays for degree, engineering, ITI, diploma, and postgraduate students.

IMD Amaravati also predicted thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at isolated places over north and south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema from Monday, 21 October to Wednesday, 23 October. From 24 to 26 October, heavy rainfall may fall over isolated places in north coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.
