Poor harvests led him to the extreme step

Elias had spent nearly 40 years farming vegetables on leased land in the hilly areas of Kannur and the nearby Kasaragod district.

For the current season, he had planted around 2,500 banana saplings with hopes of earning enough to manage his expenses and loans. However, poor harvests and low market prices meant that he did not get the returns he expected.

This left him under intense financial pressure. People close to the family said his total liabilities ran into several lakhs of rupees, which may have pushed him to take the extreme step.

In his village, Elias was known as a hardworking and creative farmer who tried new methods and crops. His dedication had earned him recognition and awards over the years.

Yet even with decades of experience and public appreciation, he struggled to survive financially. Many are calling for stronger financial assistance, easier access to loans and debt relief, and proper mental health care for those under stress.
